In the valley of the Rhine – protected by the hills and warmed by the proximity of the river – ideal conditions for vine growing prevail in terms of soil and climate.

The extremely long maturing time for the grapes, extending far into the autumn, gives the Riesling and Spätburgunder grapes that grow here in these northern wine growing areas of Germany their particular character. The slow maturing process under changing weather conditions, as well as the constant alternation between warm days and cool nights as autumn approaches, intensify the aroma and heighten the wine's fruitiness.

Bacharacher Hahn

Weingut Toni Jost - Bacharacher Hahn
The Bacharacher Hahn is one of the best and most famous vineyards located directly on the banks of the Rhine. According to the VDP Mittelrhein classification, “Große Gewächse” can be cultivated here. The site is owned almost completely by us. At the foot of the hill we grow Spätburgunder grapes, on the steep slopes above this our Riesling grapes thrive in the blue Devonian slate soil.

The Hahn is a typical steep slope vineyard, with an inclination of approx. 60%, rising up directly from the banks of the Rhine and opening to the south-southeast. The dark slate stone stores the heat of the day and feeds it slowly to the vine. The intensity of the sun's rays is heightened by its reflection on the surface of the river.

Wallufer Walkenberg

Weingut Toni Jost - Wallufer Walkenberg
Our top site in the Rheingau, Wallufer Walkenberg, is a wind-protected hill site at the foot of the Taunus mountains in the upper Rheingau region. The Walkenberg is one of the classified sites, that is to say, is one of the best vineyards in the region on which the “Erste Gewächs” may be cultivated.

Our Spätburgunder and Riesling vines thrive here in rich loess loamy soil. The vineyard opens to the southwest and lies 100 – 120 metres above sea level (NN). The micro-climate here is influenced by the proximity of the Rhine. On the day of the harvesting the grapes are transported intact to Bacharach where they are then pressed. The vinification and the marketing are also carried out in Bacharach.
